This is US Army World War II Mackinaw, also called the "Jeep Coat". There were three patterns of this winter garment. The first pattern was introduced into the inventory in 1938. It had a water resistant cotton duck outer shell with a wool blanket lining. The first patterns had the 30 ounce wool lining extend over the collar. The second pattern was issued in 1942. It was similar to the first, with the distinguishing factor being the lack of the wool lining on the shawl collar. Other differences between the two patterns the khaki color cotton poplin shell and the lighter 26 ounce wool lining as apposed to the heavier 30 ounce wool lining. The third pattern, issued in 1943, had no belt and the rounded collar was replaced by a notched collar. The third pattern "Jeep Coat" was a limited issue item, being replaced by the Model 1943 Field Jacket. This Mackinaw is the third model, as it has no belt or belt loops. The collar is notched instead of rounded. The lining is not wool, but a cotton duct material. This change, along with the wider chest and shoulder widths allowed the Mackinaw to be worn over layers of clothing. These short, waist coats were originally intended to be issued to personnel with restricted or limited movement, such as drivers. Hence the GI nickname "Jeep Coat" was born! This one is in very good condition. It is ink stamped with the size 34R and N2440 in the collar area. The quartermaster tag is sewn on the inside of the liner. It reads, "Overcoat, Wool, Roll Collar" and was manufactured by Meilman & Maged and is dated July 8, 1942. It came through the Philadelphia Depot. It is double breasted and uses three buttons to close the front of the coat. The buttons are plastic with a metal shank. The two pockets are slanted instead of parallel to the hem. There is some small moth holes along the bottom of the jacket, three on the right side of the coat and one on the left side. This is a rarer winter garment used by the Army during World War II.
