This is a World War II German Minesweeper's War badge. This badge was established on 31 August, 1940 by the Commander in Chief of the German Navy Grand Admiral Erich Raeder. This award was designated for personnel who served aboard minesweepers, sub chasers and escort vessels. In order to receive the badge sailors aboard these type ships had to have participated in three operational sorties. The badge is die struck, made of an alloy construction and has a solid back. The badge is made up of an oval shaped oak leaf wreath with an eagle at the top. The eagle's wings are outstretched, and it clutches a swastika in it's talons. The wreath, eagle and swastika are gilt washed. In the center of the wreath at the bottom are horizontal waves with a water plume exploding from the center. The waves and water plume were silver washed. The back side of the badge has no maker mark. A vertical pin with hinge at the top and a catch at the bottom of the badge complete the assembly. This badge has all the gilt showing, but oddly it has no silver wash. The pin and catch on the reverse of the badge are present and works fine. This is a unique German war badge and I bet you don't have one in your collection!
