This is a German World War II Sports badge, later known as the "SA Defense Badge". It was first introduced by Ernst Rohm on 28 November, 1933. At the badge's inception it was only issued to SA and SS personnel. On 15 February, 1935 Adolf Hitler introduced two additional levels of the award and made it available to all nationals. It was then awarded in either Bronze, Silver or Gold. The badge was awarded for passing a test that encompassed three areas, gymnastics, self defense and agricultural field service. Some of the physical exercises were performed in military attire, such as backpacks, canteens, bayonet and helmet. The criteria to earn the badge in bronze was to successfully pass an educational and physical program. The Silver badge was awarded to those individuals that held the bronze badge for five years and participated and passed the annual requirements. Individuals had to be a minimum of 35 years old to receive the silver badge. To earn the gold badge the silver had to be held for six years and successfully passed the annual requirements. These individuals had to be a minimum of 40 years old. The badge is made up of an oval shaped wreath with a sword going from the bottom to the top. The hilt of the sword is at the bottom of the wreath. The hilt and sword tip extend beyond the wreath. A swastika is in the center of the wreath and is partially covered by the sword. A vertical pin was used to attach the badge to the tunic. The back of the badge had markings and sometimes a serial number. This is the silver level of the Sports badge. The badge retains the majority of silver wash, having been worn off in the high points of the badge. The pin and catch on the back side are in perfect order. The back of the swastika and the sword have raised lettering stamped on them. It reads, "W.REDO/ IGENTUMD.OBERSTEN/ S.A. FUHRUNG/ SAAR LAUTER". This badge is in very good condition and displays wonderfully.
