This is a World War II German Infantry Assault Badge. This award was introduced 25 November, 1942 to personnel who were engaged in hand to hand combat without armor support. Like most German war badges, this was awarded in three grades, Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Bronze clasp was awarded to individuals who spent fifteen days in a hand to hand combat area, silver for thirty days and gold for fifty days. The clasp is 2 1/2" high, 1 7/8" wide and consists of a vertical oak leaf wreath with a Wehrmacht eagle at the top. The eagle has down swept wings and clutches a canted swastika in it's talons. A bolt action rifle with fixed bayonet and sling is superimposed across the center of the badge. This badge is the bronze award, with the majority of the bronze worn off. The badge has no damage, and retains it's original shape. The pin, hinge and clasp are in perfect condition. The back is marked JFS. This is a nice clasp for the beginning collector.
