This is a German Waffen SS Albanian Volunteer's sleeve shield from World War II. This sleeve insignia is 2 3/8" tall and 2" wide. It is German manufactured, having a black wool background in the shape of a shield with a flat top and rounded bottom. A red machine embroidered shield with a black double headed Albanian eagle with white eyes and fanned wings completes the patch. With the exception of very minimal fraying on the edges of the black base, this insignia is in very good condition. In 1938 Reichfuhrer-SS Heinrich Himmler began recruiting volunteer Germanic personnel who were thought to be suitably "Nordic" to serve in the SS-VT, SS-Special Purpose Troops. These troops first came from Dutch, Belgian, Danish and Norwegian, but garnered small success. In March of 1940 the Waffen SS was formed and recruiting of Germanic personnel began to increase slightly. Whne WWII broke out more Germanic volunteers came forward and joined the Waffen SS. As the war continued on and man power shortages became severe the criteria changed for admittance in the Waffen SS. By the end of the war over half of all personnel serving in the Waffen SS were non German. In April of 1944 the 21st Waffen -Gebirgs-Division der SS "Skanderberg was formed, primarily of Albanian Moslems. This unit was intended to serve in an anti partisan role in the Balkans. The division proved to be so problematic, having over 3500 desertions, that it was disbanded after six months. Personnel that were loyal were transferred to the 7th SS-Freiwilligen-Gerbirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen" to form the SS-Gebirgs-Jager Regiment 14. This insignia is what that unit wore on their tunic sleeve.
