This is a Non Regulation Foot Officer's Sword from the American Civil War era. The sword has an overall length of 37 5/8", with a blade length of 32 5/8". The blade has a very slight curve and a 20" fuller. The obverse ricasso has a small brass disk inset that is stamped PROVED. The reverse ricasso is stamped in two lines W. WALSCHEID/SOLINGEN. The blade itself is mostly black, with some ares of steel gray showing through. In places the etching can still be seen, with the E Pluribus Enum visible on the obverse side of the blade. There is a small amount of pitting on each side of the blade, and two small nicks along the edge. This one could be cleaned up to reveal a nice bright etched blade once again. The iron hilt has achieved a nice chocolate brown patina. The guard has a cut out of an eagle with the letter US underneath it and a scrolled banner with E Pluribus Enum above. The wooden grip is about 50 percent exposed, the other half still retains the marine skin covering. The very end of the grip that curves down at the pommel cap is missing. The double strand twisted wire remains tight to the grip, while the two single strand are still intact but loose on the grip. The original washer is long gone, but the blade remains as tight to the hilt as the day it was made. The peen on the pommel remains undisturbed. The iron scabbard matches the chocolate brown hilt in appearance. There are a couple of dents along the body of the scabbard and a moderate amount of pitting. The two iron mounts with iron rings and iron drag are securely attached to the scabbard. This is one more survivor of that bloody war waged on American soil that no doubt saw wartime service.
