This is a German Luftwaffe Air Gunner's / Flight Engineer's Badge from World War II. This qualification badge was introduced by Herman goring in June of 1942 and was awarded to aerial gunners, flight engineers and flight meteorologists who had met the criteria. This was an individual award that was also authorized as a cloth version to be worn on the flight blouse. The enlisted/NCO version was machine embroidered while the officer's were hand embroidered. The badge is of two piece, die struck alloy construction. It is in the form of a convex, vertically oval wreath with laurel leaves to the left side and oak leaves to the right side and a canted swastika superimposed to the bottom center. Mounted on the wreath is a highly vaunted eagle in flight. The eagle is secured to the wreath by two rivets that are visible on the back side. The eagles wing tips extend just beyond the outer edge of the wreath. The badge shows nice quality detailing with intricate feathering to the wings and high relief details to the wreath. If you collect German Luftwaffe this badge will compliment your collection very well.
