This is a WWII German SS collar tab for the 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Russian volunteer Kaminski Brigade. In August, 1929, the SS incorporated the wear of rank collar tabs on the left side of the collar of the service tunic. The SS collar tabs were originally adopted from the earlier rank collar tabs utilized by the SA. Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler's obsession with pagan runic symbolism manifested itself in runic emblems used by the SS, the most famous of which was the dual sig-runes used on the right hand side collar tabs introduced in May, 1933. Additional runic style collar tabs were introduced at various times through out the war. The assorted SS collar tabs remained in usage through out the war with a couple of minor alterations. The 29th Waffen Grenadier Division was formed in August, 1944 of personnel from the Russian volunteer Kaminski Brigade. The division never reached divisional strength and was disbanded shortly after its formation due to atrocities committed by it's personnel during the Warsaw uprising. Due to the racial makeup of the divisional personnel Himmler forbade wear of the SS runes on the collar insignia as he did not consider it to be a true SS division and a specially designed collar tab was introduced and produced. It appears that they were never issued due to the disbanding of the division. The collar tab is made of black wool construction and worn on the right hand side of the collar. It is a unit designation featuring a machine embroidered, Pattee style cross with a circular centerpiece. It is superimposed over upward pointing, crossed swords all in silvery/grey rayon threads. The collar tab is mounted on a tan buckram backing. This is a perfect example of a little known German SS unit and will complete your collar tab collection!
