This is a German Nazi 13th Waffen Gebirgs Division collar tab from World War II. It is made of black wool construction for the right side collar. The unit designated collar tab features a machine embroidered hand clutching a scimitar with a canted swastika positioned just below the handle. All are sewn with silvery/gray cotton thread. The collar tab is mounted on a tan buckram backing. In August of 1929 the SS incorporated the wear of rank collar tabs on the left side of the collar and unit tabs on the right side of the collar of the service tunic. The SS rank collar tabs were originally adapted from the earlier rank collar tabs used by the SA. The SS collar tabs remained in use through out the war with couple of minor alterations and numerous additions. EM/NCO collar tabs were piped in twisted white cord from their inception until October of 1934 when the piping was modified to alternating twisted black and silver/aluminum cord piping. The final modification, in August of 1940, eliminated all piping from the EM/NCO collar tabs. On 10 February, 1943, Hitler ordered the formation of a new Waffen-SS Division to be manned by volunteers from the Independent State of Croatia. This new division would eventually evolve into the 13 Waffen Gebirgs Division der SS "Handchar". This unit was manned primarily by Muslims from the Bosnia-Herzegovina region of Croatia, with a cadre of German personnel from the 7th SS Freiwillingen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen". Due to the racial makeup of the division personnel Reichfuhrer Himmler forbade the wear of the SS runes on the collar insignia and it was decided that another suitable symbol be utilized and the distinctive collar insignia for personnel was introduced on 30 April, 1943. This collar tab is in very good condition, and will fit into your WWII German collar and patch collection nicely!
