This is a World War II German Wermacht Non Commissioned Officer's Visor cap. The cap is in typical Heer (Army) green wool with a 1 5/8" wide forest green band and a traditional high peak with matching white piping along the top edge and flanking either side of the band, representing the Infantry branch of arms. It is decorated with a well detailed silver aluminum eagle insignia on the peak and an open silvered aluminum wreath surrounding a tri color cockade on the band. The dual buckled black leather chinstrap, designating the wearer to be an enlisted man, is attached to black lacquered buttons on either side. The visor has a smooth black leather look upper and has no blemishes. The dark brown leather sweatband shows staining from normal wear. A makers name and date are stamped on the inside of the sweatband by the right side of the visor. I can't quite make out the maker, but the date is 1938. The inside of the cap is lined with a pumpkin colored cotton. The diamond shaped clear plastic shield is still intact. There is no maker mark stamped beneath the shield, just the size number 55. At the rear of liner there is an ink stamp, but it is no longer legible. Written in ink beside the stamp is the name CAGAL. The same name is also written on the opposite side of the diamond shaped shield. I don't know if this is the name of the German soldier who wore it, or the American soldier that brought it home after the war. This hat is in overall fine condition, having no discoloration, stains or moth issues anywhere. It exhibits only slight staining form normal use. This one will really make your WWII collection look great!
