This is a Model 1940 German helmet from World War II. This model helmet first appeared in 1935 and was an upgrade of the Model 1917 version. The early 1940 helmets received the Heer decal on the left side of the helmet and the National Colors decal on the right side. The decal was not applied at the factory after 1943 to comply with orders issued by the Commander of the Wermacht. These helmets had rolled edges and stamped air vents embossed directly into the steel shell. Exterior paint colors were from medium green to a very dark, almost black, green. Various degrees of texturing were added to the helmet exterior, depending on the plant the helmet was manufactured at. The helmet interior was smooth painted the same color as the exterior. The Model 1940 was similar in appearance to the Model 1917, but was lighter, more functional and significantly updated. Early Model 1940 helmets were issued with the first model aluminum band helmet liners. Model 1940's produced after 1943 were issued with the second model zinc band liners. This helmet is a mid war Model 1940, equipped with the zinc band liner. There are no decals on either side of the helmet. The factory stamps are on the left side rim and the rear of the helmet. Stamped on the left side is Q64, the Q represents the Quist factory located in Esslingen, Germany. The number 64 is the shell size of 64mm. Stamped into the rear of the helmet are the numbers 949, the production run of the helmet. In 1943 this plant started stamping there marks in the rear of the helmet. This one has roughly 500% of the original dark green paint remaining on the outside of the helmet. The inside retains 75% of the original paint. The chin strap has been cut and only the ends where they are braded to the bails remain. The drawstring looks to be original. The liner is complete and the leather is dry, but pliable. It fits the shell very tight. So tight that I have been unable to see the stamps on the front, right and left side of the liner. The leather shows signs of significant wear. This one definitely has the look of having been there! If you collect WWII memorabilia here's an opportunity to own an honest, combat used iconic German helmet from that global conflict.
