This is a set of World War II Parachutist's Wings, more commonly referred to as "Jump Wings". This badge was designed by Cpt William Yarborough of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment and approved for use on 10 March, 1941. In order to qualify to were the badge a 'trooper" had to complete Airborne training that included 5 jumps. This criteria is still in place today, and earning your wings also comes with the title of "5 Jump Chump"! This set of wings are marked Sterling, but have no maker mark. The badge is a pin back, and has the thinner, American made pin. The round catch works perfectly and holds the pin secure when closed. One bronze campaign star has been attached to the front to indicate the wearer made one combat jump. Each star represented a jump made under combat conditions, with a maximum of 5 stars being "unofficially" authorized. Paratroopers who made the Normandy jump were authorized to attach a bronze arrowhead, indicating they were the spearhead of an operation. During WWII the 82nd Division made more combat jumps that the 101st. If you are a collector of WWII Airborne memorabilia your collections isn't complete without a set of these.
