This is a Model 1894 German "hebel" flare gun used by the German Army from the 1890's through World War II. It was the standard issue flare gun during World War I. These flare guns are made of heavy gage steel with wooden grips and show a high degree of craftsmanship. They came in three different barrel lengths, with a blued or plated finish and had a 26.5mm bore. This has an overall length of 14", with a barrel length of 9". The metal surfaces are smooth, with only a couple of small spots of light pitting. The majority of the bluing remains on this one. The bore is rust and pit free, just needs a good cleaning! The break open action works fine, as well as the mechanics of the hammer and trigger. The two piece wooden grips retain some of the original finish, but show moderate wear from usage. The right side grip has two small age cracks at the very top of the grip, each about 1/2" long. The lanyard ring is still reporting for duty on this old war horse. The right side of the barrel and frame have proof marks of an eagle, crown over the letter B and a cursive A within a circle. The left side of the frame has the manufactures name of CHR. F., standing for Christoph Funk of Suhl, Germany. The serial number of 13596 is stamped to the right of the manufacturers stamp. This is an excellent example of a German used flare gun that saw service through two World Wars.
