Pre Civil War Militia Canteen
Item #: WR80

This is a pre civil war era tin canteen that was most likely carried by a militia man. This one is unusual in the fact that it is oval shaped. It measures 5 1/2" tall, 4" across at the widest point and approximately 1 3/4" thick. This one is of three piece construction, excluding the spout. The front and back pieces are fitted over a center, oval shaped ring about 3/4" wide. All seams have been lead soldered, to include the spout. A cork plug is in the spout and looks to have been in there for quite some time. There is a small wire pull inserted into the cork that is attached to a small piece of woven string, approximately 6" long. The other end of the string is attached to a cloth sling made for the canteen. The carrying sling is made of two pieces of cloth that have been tarred. One piece is roughly 48" long and forms the loop that the canteen rests in. It is fastened together at the free ends by a wooden button and another piece of string. A shorter piece of the sling secures the canteen to the larger loop, and is retained by black japanned brass tacks. This little canteen will hold approximately a pint of liquid, so it makes me wonder if it's intended use was for water, or perhaps something a little stronger! The canteen and sling are in very good condition. The sling is still very pliable and strong with no breaks or frays in the stitching. There is one small dent in the canteen, just below and to the left of the spout.
