This is a Federal Breast Plate from the American Civil War. It is in great condition considering it was excavated. This one came into the shop with oral history of being recovered in Nicholas Count, West Virginia. During the Civil War Nicholas County was still considered part of Virginia, and was the site of the Battle of Carnifex Ferry. The battle occurred on 10 September, 1861 and was considered a Union victory. This was an important victory for the Union, as it helped pave the way for the creation of West Virginia as a separate state. Approximately 5000 Union soldiers under the command of Brigadier General William Rosecrans were engaged with 2000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Brigadier General John Floyd the day of the battle. While the Confederate forces won the initial battle, they were forced to pull back from their position at the Patterson house because of the Union artillery. The plate has a beautiful dark chocolate patina with some dirt of the excavation remaining around the rim and in the relief areas of the eagle. It actually creates a great contrast and makes the eagle really stand out. There is one small bend in the plate, on the right edge of the plate. The back retains all the lead. The original wire hooks are still present, but show the effects of being in the ground. There is no visible makers mark on the back. This is an iconic piece that easily identifies with the American Civil War in excellent condition for an excavated example.
