This is a US Model 1898 haversack identified to an Alabama National Guard field artillery unit. The M1898 haversack was a design improvement over the M1874 haversack. The front flap of the haversack measures 14" by 14". It is divided into two compartments, with smaller utensil pockets sewn in for the mess fork and knife. Utensil scabbards were used in the pockets to prevent damage to the haversack from the utensils. The haversack is made of drab cotton duck canvas, and shows heavy use and some staining. On the front of the flap is the stenciled U.S., along with the unit markings of the number 2/crossed cannons/E/117. This stencil represents Echo Battery, 2nd Battalion, 117th Field Artillery. There are two brass d-rings sewn onto the rear of the haversack, to be used with the carrying sling. The only other stamp on the haversack is a faded, but legible, makers mark of Rock Island Arsenal. The closure strap and brass buckle are still reporting for duty. This Model haversack saw service well into the 20th century. The 117th Field Artillery was first organized in August thru September of 1916. It saw service in both World War I and World War II. The M1898 haversack itself was used during the Philippine Insurrection, WWI, WWII and into Korea. This is a nice, but heavily used example of a long serving piece of Army gear!
