Maker Marked and Dated Civil War Era Driver's Whip
Item #: WR107
This is Civil War era buggy/carriage driver's whip dated 1862. The whip has an overall length of 54", with the handle being 20" long and the leather measuring 34". It has a bone colored handle and a wooden body wrapped with tightly braided leather. The lash is also made of tightly braided leather. The handle has 20 incised X's cut into it, 11 on the top and 9 on the bottom. An ornate silver band 1 1/4" tall encircles the whip where the stick and handle meet. At the bottom it is dated 1862, and along the top is the name H. MERRETT. I don't know if that name identifies the maker of the whip, or the owner of it. This is just something you don't see everyday. Who knows, if it was down south I can just see some Reb Artillery driver making his team of horses move with this thing!
