This is a Federal Breast Plate from the American Civil War. It is in great condition considering it was excavated. This one came into the shop with oral history of being recovered near Corinth, Mississippi. During the Civil War Corinth was the site of two large scale battles. The first battle, an actual siege, occurred from 29 April through 30 May, 1862 and was considered a Union victory. This was an important victory for the Union, as it set the tone of things to come in the Western theater, a Union Army on the offensive. Approximately 120000 Union soldiers under the overall command of Major General Henry Halleck were engaged with 65000 Confederate soldiers under the command of General P.G.T. Beauregard during the month long siege. Eventually the outnumbered Confederates had to evacuate the town of Corinth. The plate has a beautiful dark chocolate patina. There is one small nick in the plate, on the left edge of the plate. The back retains all the lead. The original wire hooks are still present, but have been flattened and one end is broken off. There is no visible makers mark on the back. This is an iconic piece that easily identifies with the American Civil War in excellent condition for an excavated example.
