This is a Federal Breast Plate from the American Civil War. It is in great condition considering it was excavated. This one came into the shop with oral history of being recovered in Henrico county, Virginia. There area was the site of the Battle of Seven Pines, also known as the Battle of Fair Oaks. The battle took place from 31 May through 1 June, 1862 and was considered an inconclusive outcome. Approximately 34000 Union soldiers under the overall command of Major General George McClellan were engaged with 39000 Confederate soldiers under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston during the two day battle. During the battle the Confederate commander, General Johnston, was seriously wounded. This event led to General Robert E. Lee assuming command of the Army of Northern Virginia. So while the Battle of Seven Pines was considered to have an inconclusive outcome, it changed the tide of war in favor of the Confederates under the command of the aggressive and unpredictable Lee. The plate has a beautiful dark chocolate patina, with the rim and high points of the eagle having a golden hue. There are no nicks or any other damage with this plate. The back retains all the lead. The original wire hooks are still present, but one end has been flattened. There is no visible makers mark on the back. This is an iconic piece that easily identifies with the American Civil War in excellent condition for an excavated example.
