1901 Memphis UCV Parade Flag From the VY Cook Estate

This is a parade flag from the 1901 United Confederate Veterans Reunion held in Memphis, Tn. The flag measures 5 1/4" by 9 1/4". The edges of the flag are ever so slightly frayed. It looks as though it was cut, but never finished. The little white border representing the heading of the flag has never been attached to a stick, there are no staple holes in it. The colors of the flag are faded, but still very clear. Printed in purple ink along the heading is UCV MEMPHIS 1901. This flag was found in a book that was purchased from the Virgil Cook estate. Cook was a veteran of the Civil War and the Spanish American War. He was 14 years old when he ran away from home to join the Confederate Army. Virgil and his brother served in Company H, Seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry. This Kentucky unit served under Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The two brothers served with the Seventh Kentucky until the end of the war, being paroled on 16 May, 1865 at Gainesville, Alabama. Virgil was still less than 18 years old when his unit surrendered. Virgil was commissioned a Colonel during the Spanish American War. He commanded the 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Infantry US Volunteers. Cook died in Batesville, Arkansas in 1922. Apparently the Colonel picked this flag up at the first Memphis UCV reunion, the largest one ever held. It remains in very good condition, having been used as a book mark for over 90 years.
