Civil War Riker Case 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment

This is a riker case with five Civil War bullets and a brief regimental history of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, Confederate States Army. The five bullets, one a .31 caliber pistol ball, one a .44 caliber Colt bullet, one a .58 caliber Minie bullet, one a .69 caliber round ball and the other a .69 caliber Minie bullet, were recovered at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Shiloh, Fort Donelson and Shiloh, Tennessee respectively. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment", along with the identification of each bullet, a brief regimental history, battles and campaigns that the regiment took part in and a picture of the officer who formed and commanded them, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest. The 3rd Tennessee Cavalry was organized as an eight company battalion in October, 1861 in Memphis, Tennessee. It was increased to regimental size in January, 1862. At different times during the war over 20 companies from Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Louisiana were attached to the regiment. It was commanded by Forrest at the battles of Sacramento, Kentucky, Forts Henry & Donelson and Shiloh, Tennessee. After Forrest was promoted to Brigadier General and moved on to brigade command, the 3rd was commanded by D.C. Kelly and then Robert Balch. The 3rd was assigned to the Cavalry brigade of Brigadier General Beall in the Army of Mississippi. The 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was surrendered in May, 1865 in Gainesville, Alabama. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
