Civil War Riker Case Brigadier General Edward Porter Alexander

This is a riker case with four Civil War bullets and a depiction of a Confederate Artillery position at the Battle of Fredericksburg. There is an image of Brigadier General Edward Porter Alexander, a brief biography of him, and a list of major battles he fought in during the war. Alexander served in different capacities in the artillery of Lieutenant General James Longstreet's 1st Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, to include his Chief of Artillery. His ability to command the artillery is credited with much of the success at the Battle of Fredericksburg. He is also given credit for his effective use of his guns at the Battle Of Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Alexander, then a Colonel, was in charge of the Confederate cannonade prior to Pickett's Charge. E. Porter Alexander survived the Civil War and afterward he taught mathematics at the University of South Carolina and was a railroad executive for several different railroads. The four bullets, one a shot bullet recovered at Spotsylvania, Virginia, one a .52 caliber Sharps bullet recovered at Petersburg, Virginia, one a .58 caliber Minie bullet recovered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the other a .577 caliber Enfield bullet recovered in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The parchment style paper has been labeled "Brigadier General Edward Porter Alexander", along with the identification of each bullet, the dates of Alexander's birth and death and the battles he fought in. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
