This is an oval photograph of General John "Black Jack" Pershing in an oval bubble glass frame. The photograph was taken in 1918 near the wars end at his headquarters in Chaumont, France. The image is 18 3/4" high by 12 3/4" wide. Pershing is dressed in his 1918 dress tunic with officer's hat and Sam Brown belt. His epaulettes have the four stars of an American General. There are five ribbons above his left pocket, but the only one I can clearly identify is the Mexican Border Service on the bottom right. Pershing was a career military officer, serving from 1886 - 1924. He saw action and commanded troops in the Indian Wars, Spanish American War, Philippine American War, Russo-Japanese War, Mexican Revolution, and was the Commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. In 1919 Congress create the rank of General of the Armies of the United States, just for Pershing. John J Pershing died on 15 July, 1948 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the men he commanded during WWI. If you have a WWI collection, you just gotta have the commander of all the American forces who fought in France!
