Civil War Riker Case British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket

This is a riker case with two Civil War bullets, a percussion cap, an Enfield Tompion cap and a depiction of an Pattern 1853 Type III Enfield rifle musket used during the Civil War. The Enfield rifle musket was the most heavily imported long arm of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Pattern 1853 Enfield was produced in three variations, the Type I, II and III, with the Type III being the predominant one. It was manufactured in .577 and .58 caliber. It is estimated that 900,000 Pattern 1853 Enfield's were imported between 1861 and 1865. It weighed nine and one half pounds and was 55" in length. The two bullets, one a shot Enfield bullet, the other a .577 Enfield Plug Base Bullet, the percussion cap and the Tompion cap were all recovered in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The parchment style paper has been labeled "British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket", along with the identification of the two bullets, percussion cap and Tompion cap. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
