This is a riker case with three Civil War bullets, a depiction of the Carter Family Cotton Gin and images of Lieutenant General John Bell Hood and Major General John Schofield. The three bullets, one a shot bullet, one a .58 caliber cleaner and the other a .58 caliber Minie bullet, were recovered at Franklin, Tennessee. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The Battle of Franklin Tennessee", along with the identification of each bullet and a summary of the Battle of Franklin. The Battle of Franklin was fought on 30 November, 1864. The Confederate Army of Tennessee, under the command of Lieutenant General John Bell Hood, had moved back into Tennessee after the fall of Atlanta in hopes of disrupting Union General William T Sherman's supply lines and stopping his advance through Georgia. The Battle of Franklin turned out to be one of the costliest fights the Confederates would endure. Hood ordered futile frontal assaults on the Union positions at Franklin, all of which were repulsed with serious casualties. At the end of the day Confederate losses were over 6200, with 14 generals and 55 regimental commanders being killed, wounded or captured. The Battle of Franklin was the beginning of the end for the Army of Tennessee. Two weeks later the Army of Tennessee was virtually destroyed at the Battle of Nashville. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
