This is a riker case with three Civil War bullets, a depiction of a Gettysburg battle scene and images of General Robert E. Lee and Major General George G. Meade. The three bullets, one a shot bullet, one a .58 caliber Minie bullet and the other a .58 caliber Gardner bullet, were recovered on Taneytown Road, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania", along with the identification of each bullet and a summary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought on 1 - 3 July, 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, had moved into Pennsylvania in hopes of relieving the pressure on the war torn economy of Virginia and enticing the Union Army of the Potomac away from Washington. The Battle of Gettysburg would be the turning point of the war. The three days of fighting ended with the famous "Pickett's Charge", a frontal assault by a Confederate Corps sized element against fortified Union positions in the center of the Union defensive line. The results for the attacking Confederates was catastrophic, with two of the three division commanders being wounded. In Pickett's division alone two brigade commanders were killed and the third seriously wounded. Of the 40 field grade officer's in the Virginia division, 26 were killed, wounded or captured. Confederate casualties for the three days fighting were 4708 killed, 12,691 wounded and 5827 missing or captured, while the Union losses were 3155 killed, 14527 wounded and 5369 missing or captured. The Army of Northern Virginia would never recover from the losses incurred at Gettysburg, but would continue to fight for almost two more years. The Union gained a very important victory in this small Pennsylvania town, and never again would the Confederacy mount any large scale offensive operations. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
