Civil War Riker Case 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment

This is a riker case with six Civil War bullets and a brief regimental history of the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army. The six bullets, one a .31 caliber pistol bullet, one a .44 caliber Colt pistol bullet, one a .577 Enfield bullet, one a .54 caliber Minie bullet, one a .58 caliber Minie bullet and the other a .69 caliber round ball, were recovered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Atlanta, Georgia, Chickamauga, Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee, Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Shiloh, Tennessee respectively. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment", along with the identification of each bullet, a brief regimental history and battles and campaigns that the regiment took part in. Known simply as the "First Tennessee". the regiment was mustered on 2 May, 1861 as a voluntary infantry regiment commanded for the first 90 days by Colonel George Maney, afterwards commanded by Colonel Hume Field. Sam Davis joined the regiment as a scout, but was executed as a spy by Union forces. The regiment was active from 1861 through 1865. The regiment fought in two engagements with the Army of Northern Virginia, then was sent west to fight with the Army of Tennessee for the remained of the war. The regiment was surrendered at Durham, North Carolina on 26 April, 1865 by General Joseph E. Johnston. Of the nearly 1200 men who first formed the 1st Tennessee, only 125 officers and men were left at the final surrender. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
