Item #: WR156
This is a riker case with two Civil War bullets, a depiction of the fighting at Malvern Hill and an image of Brigadier General Lewis Armistead. The two bullets, one a shot bullet and the other a .58 caliber Minie bullet, were recovered at Malvern Hill, Virginia. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia", along with the identification of each bullet and a summary of the Battle of Malvern Hill. The Battle of Malvern Hill was fought on 1 July, 1862. It is considered the final battle of the Seven Days Battles, the end of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign to capture Richmond. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, was met by the Union's Army of the Potomac under the command of Major General George B. McClellan at Malvern Hill, Virginia. The Union V Corps, commanded by Brigadier General Fitz John Porter, took up positions on Malvern Hill on 30 June. A series of mishaps for the Confederates caused the battle to be fought in stages. Brigadier General Armistead noticed Union skirmishers advancing towards his position, and ordered three regiments of his brigade to push them back. The confusion among the other commanders thought that Armistead had began the attack. Eventually three successive Confederate charges against the Union positions were repulsed by massed Union artillery, with heavy casualties inflicted on the Confederates. Union casualties were 314 killed, 1875 wounded and 818 missing or captured. The Confederate casualties were 869 killed, 4241 wounded and 540 captured or missing. The battle was considered a tactical Union victory. The riker case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
