Vietnam Era Model 1956 Canteen Cover with Canteen

This is a US Model 1910 canteen manufactured by the Mirro Company in 1962. This canteen is in issued, very good condition. The vertical seam weld is indicative of the construction process renewed in 1943, when the aluminum ban was lifted. The cap is made of Bakelite, the cork seal is missing. A retaining chain is riveted to the top of the cap and attached to a retaining ring at the neck of the canteen. The cap is 1" tall and is recessed on top, to protect the chain rivet. The back of the canteen is lightly stamped in two lines, US/MIRRO 1962. There is no canteen cup with this set. The cotton duck cover is of the darker OD color introduced in 1943. The carrier is in very good condition and shows moderate wear. One of the ALICE clips is missing. All stitching is strong and shows no fraying. Ink stamped on the back of the carrier is COVER, CANTEEN, M-1956/QM 11569-E-62/P N 3465-577-4928. This one most likely saw service during the Vietnam war. Of all the gear a GI carries, this is the one thing he can't go without. This model canteen saw service in WWI, WWII, Korea, and the early part of the Vietnam war. Nice little piece for the beginning collector.
