Sharps Four Shot .22 Caliber Pepperbox

This is a Model 1 A Sharps breech loading four shot .22 caliber rimfire pepperbox from the Civil War era. This little "hide out" gun measures 4 3/4" in length, with a four shot barrel 2 1/2" in length. The brass framed pepperbox has gutta percha grips that are embellished with floral designs. The brass framed guns were silver plated and had blued barrels. This one retains none of the silver plating. The barrels have a trace of original bluing in the recessed areas, but have a steel gray patina for the most part. The gutta percha grips are in excellent condition, having no chips, cracks or breaks. The left sdie of the frame is stamped C. SHARPS PATENT 1859 in a circular motif. The right side of the frame is stamped C. SHARPS & Co PHILADA. PA. in a circular motif. The matching serial number of 48890 is found stamped on the bottom of the barrel and the bottom of the brass back strap. The mechanics of work like perfect on this pepperbox, the firing pin rotating 90 degrees each time the hammer is cocked. The bores of the barrels have good rifling and just need a good cleaning. This is a nice example of the four shot pepperbox made by the Christopher Sharps Company, before he went into business with Hankins.
