WWII USMC Third Pattern Canteen Cover with Canteen Set
Item #: WR195
This is a US Model 1910 canteen manufactured by the Aluminum Company of America in 1918. This canteen is in issued, very good condition. The vertical seam weld is indicative of the construction process developed by the Rock Island Arsenal in 1913. The cap is made of aluminum, has a domed top and fluted vertical side ribs. The cork seal is still reporting for duty! A retaining chain is riveted to the top of the cap and attached to a retaining ring at the neck of the canteen. The back of the canteen is clearly stamped in two lines, US/ACA 1918. A number 6 is also stamped to the left of the US. The canteen cup with this set is manufactured by the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company and is also dated 1918. The bottom of the cup is clearly stamped in three lines US/AGMC/1918. The handle is also stamped 132 D 16. The Marine Corps issued each marine two canteens, but only one cup. The cotton duck cover is a light OD color. The carrier is the third pattern Marine Carps cover with the hole in the bottom. It is in very good condition and shows moderate wear. All stitching is strong and shows no fraying. The only stamp visible on the carrier is an ink stamp of DQP., 1942-1943. Of all the gear a GI carries, this is the one thing he can't go without. This model canteen saw service in WWI, WWII, Korea, and the early part of the Vietnam war. Nice little piece for the beginning collector.
