This is a cabinet card image of Sergeant Lemuel Zaring taken in Atlanta, Georgia in the early 1900's. The visible image measures 3 3/4" wide by 5 1/2" tall. It is housed in a cardboard frame that measures 6 3/4" wide by 11" tall. The top corners of the frame are rounded off, the same as the bottom corners. There is some light flaking along the edges and top of the frame, but nothing that detracts from the image. There is no damage to the image at all. The image shows Sergeant Zaring in his later years, in a sitting pose with a plain back drop. He is wearing a civilian suits with vest, white shirt and tie. Zaring has a white beard and hair and was in his late seventies or eighties when this photograph was taken. He holds a cane in his left hand, and prominently displayed on his left lapel is his Southern Cross of Honor. The studio's name and location are printed on the front of the cardboard frame, "Reeves Photo ATLANTA". The Reeves Studio's was in business between 1914 and 1984 and was located in Atlanta, Georgia. A quick check of the Civil War Research Database shows a Sergeant Lemuel Zaring in Company C, Tennessee Burns Light Artillery. He enlisted on 15 July, 1861 and joined his unit at Bowling Green, Kentucky. Morton took over the command of the battery when his commander, Captain Thomas Porter, was severely wounded at Ft Donelson, Tennessee. Morton went on to become General Forrest's Chief of Artillery, while Sergeant Zaring remained with the battery. This is a very nice early 1900's image of a Confederate Kentucky Artilleryman that served under one of the most famous Confederate artillery commanders of the Civil War. The image comes in a clear hard plastic sleeve, along with a photograph of what is believed to be Zaring at age 27 in 1864, a print out of the Civil War research database concerning Zaring and a brief bio on him.
