This is a set of saddle bags designed as part of the Model 1859 McClellan saddle system. The saddle bags are 36" wide and each bag measures 9" across and 9" tall. While this set of saddle bags do exhibit wear from use they are in very good condition. The leather is a little dry, but still pliable. There is very little crazing, flaking or loss of leather and all stitching is tight and unbroken. The yoke has no repairs and the single hole for the stud remains undamaged. The straps used to retain the yoke to the foot loops on the saddle are both present. It appears that the slots in the yokes to fit over the foot loops have been elongated by a previous trooper. Both additional cuts to the slots are in the same location and are the same length. This was probably done to make mounting the bags quicker and easier. The closure straps and buckles for the bags are all present and complete. The lower tie down straps have been cut down and one of the straps with the buckle is broken. The broken strap is inside one of the bags. The interior pocket laces are missing, which is usually the case with these old saddle bags. There is one detractor with these bags, someone has written in black ink on the back of the left bag 5009 C. The writing is about 1/4" high. Mounted on a saddle or displayed by themselves this writing would not be visible. There are no makers marks or inspectors stamps visible on this set of bags. Overall, they display very well and would compliment any Cavalry collection.
