This is a Sturmabteilung (SA) hat from the 1930's with affiliation to the Schlesien group. The SA, or "Brownshirts" as they were commonly referred to, were the Nazi party's original paramilitary organization. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler coming into power, and existed from the 1920's until the party was officially dissolved on 8 May, 1945. This hat is made of brown cotton with a yellow wool band around the top. The material shows light staining and wear from normal use and handling. The original Nazi party eagle with canted swastika is pinned to the front of the kepi, just above the silver button. The brown leather chin strap is in perfect condition. The interior of the hat is in very good condition also. The brown leather sweatband shows honest wear, and is cracked in one place and torn in another. The oilcloth liner is intact and has a size 57 ink stamped in the center. There are four other ink stamps visible on the liner. An RZM oilcloth tag is sewn into the back of the kepi, under the sweatband and is very legible. The manufacturers code is 253, and another number ink stamped on the tag is 396768. These original SA "Coffee Can" cap are rare on the market, and this is one of the best examples you will see. If you are a collector of Pre WWII German artifacts, this one definitely belongs in your collection.
