Civil War Riker Case Brigadier General John Adams

This is a riker case with three Civil War bullets, a depiction of Confederate Infantry at the Battle of Franklin, an image of Brigadier General John Adams, and a summary of his military career. Adams was born in Nashville, Tennessee on 1 July, 1825 to immigrant Irish parents. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1846, ranked 25th in his class. He was commissioned a a 2nd Lieutenant in the Dragoons, serving under Captain Philip Kearny. During the Mexican American war Adams was breveted for gallantry at the battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales. When that war ended, Adams served on the frontier, primarily in California. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the state militia, and served as the aide de camp to the Governor of Minnesota in 1853. When Tennessee seceded from the Union, Adams resigned his commission in the US Army and joined the Confederate Army shortly after. He was commissioned as a Captain in the Cavalry. In 1862 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, and by December of that year he was a Brigadier General. He replaced Lloyd Tilghman as the commander of his brigade in the Division of Major General William Loring. Adams was a very competent leader, and was recognized for his ability on the battlefield in official reports on numerous occasions. Brigadier General Adams was chosen to lead the advance of John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee back into Tennessee after the failed Atlanta Campaign. Adams would become one of six Confederate Generals to be killed at the Second battle of Franklin. The three bullets, one a shot .58 caliber Minie bullet recovered at Franklin, Tennessee, one a .58 caliber Gardner bullet recovered at Chickamauga, Georgia and one a .577 Enfield bullet recovered at Atlanta, Georgia. The parchment style paper has been labeled "Brigadier General John Adams", along with the identification of each bullet, the dates of Adam's birth and death and the battles he fought in. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
