This is a reed green German fatigue blouse from World War II. The five button front jacket is a medium size. The jacket is well constructed and is not lined. All stitching is tight and unbroken, and all the buttons are securely attached. Four of the five buttons are the pebbled texture buttons, while the bottom button has the distinctive German helmet with the inscription "Der Stahlhelm" within the helmet profile. This blouse shows tons of honest wear, having some staining on the sleeves and other areas. The collar has been worn thread bare, and stitched back up. The lower button hole is slightly torn and both the pockets have holes on the inside bottom corners. This one no doubt saw a lot of use. The "Der Stalhhelm" was a Veterans organization that was founded in 1918 from front line German soldiers. It became extinct in 1935, so apparently the soldier who wore this fatigue blouse was a member, and most likely went into the SA. The fatigue blouse was issued to recruits prior to 1940 during basic training as a drill uniform. Most kept them for use during work details where the uniform was likely to get soiled. It was unlined, had no insignia and was made of linen or cotton herringbone twill. The blouse had two patch pockets on the skirt that had no flaps or buttons. Originally the fatigue uniform was undyed and the color ranged from white to cement gray. On 12 February, 1940 the color was ordered changed to a bluish green that was called reed green. There was no official summer uniform for the German Army. In the hot summer months troops took to wearing their lightweight fatigue uniforms in place of the heavy wool uniforms. This would look good on an early war German displayed mannequin.
