This is a Nathan Starr contract Model 1798 Dragoon saber from the late 1700's. It has an overall length of 39 3/4", with a blade length of 33 1/2". The blade width at the hilt is 1 9/16", and the spine is 1/4" wide at the hilt. The obverse side of the blade is stamped N:Starr & CO, while the reverse side is stamped US/1799. There is a narrow, deep fuller that runs from the hilt that is 26 3/4" in length. The blade has a gradual curve to it, indicative of a dragoon saber. It has a dull gray appearance, with darker aged spots across the length of the blade. There is one small area of rust on the blade approximately 2/3's of the way down from the hilt. It is surface rust and has lightly pitted the blade. The edge of the blade has a few dings and nicks, they appear to be saber strikes. This one looks to have seen a little blade to blade action! The hilt is made of iron and is of the stirrup design, with a plain quillon topping it off. The back strap has the same matching patina as the hilt. The grip is intact and still has the complete wrap and wire. Both the leather wrap and twisted wire are very tight to the grip. The peen appears to be undisturbed, and the entire hilt is still very tight to the blade. The Model 1798 Dragoon saber is the first contract saber for the newly established US government. There were only 2000 of them produced, all by the Nathan Starr Company of Midddletown, Connecticut. The saber is in very fine condition and will never need to be upgraded.
