This is a ceremonial dress axe for a German Fireman used during World War II. It has a length of 16 1/4" and is 6 3/4" wide across the head. All of the metal parts have been nickel plated and retain the majority of the plating. The wooden handle has been painted black, and retains the majority of the color. There is some slight paint loss on the side of the handle that would have been against the wearers body. The head is slightly loose and has just a small amount of deflection. There are two nickel plated escutcheon plates under the head that provide a mounting point for the tow suspension rings. The rings were used to suspend the axe from a belt when worn for formal occasions. One of the river heads is missing from the escutcheon plates, but both remain secure to the handle. In 1938 , the Nazis nationalized the local fire departments and made them a part of the police force. In large cities volunteer fire departments augmented the full tile departments. When the war began, compulsory fire departments were formed. Like all other Third Reich Civil organizations, the men of the fire departments wore various uniforms, from coveralls to dress uniforms. The fireman had to purchase their own edged weapon to wear with the dress uniform for ceremonial and dress occasions. They could wear either a dress bayonet or a dress axe. The dress axes were all private purchase, and there was not one set pattern for them. This dress axe is one of the more basic versions. It does show wear from use but still displays well. This will compliment any WWII German police/fireman's display.
