Civil War Riker Case Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest

This is a riker case with four Civil War bullets, a depiction of Confederate Cavalry, an image of Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest, and a summary of his military career. Forrest was born in Chapel Hill, Tennessee on 13 July, 1821 to poor settler parents. He had no formal education, as he became head of the household at age 16 due to his father's death. When Tennessee seceded from the Union Nathan Bedford Forrest joined the Confederate Army as a private 14 June, 1861. He was given a commission from the Governor of Tennessee as a Lieutenant Colonel and authorized to recruit and train a battalion of mounted rangers. In October, 1861 he took command of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Even though Forrest had no formal military training, he proved to be very successful in commanding troops in the field from the beginning. By the war's end, Forrest was a Lieutenant General in command of a Corps of Cavalry. He was known as "The Wizard of the Saddle" for his lighting fast raids, and was regarded as one of the most feared Commanders on the field of battle. The four bullets, one a shot .58 caliber Minie bullet recovered at Franklin, Tennessee, one a .44 caliber Colt bullet recovered at Nashville, Tennessee, one a .577 caliber Enfield bullet recovered at Chickamauga, Tennessee and one a .69 caliber ball recovered at Shiloh, Tennessee. The parchment style paper has been labeled "Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest", along with the identification of each bullet, the dates of Forrest's birth and death and the battles he fought in. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
