Confederate Foot Artillery Sword

This is a Confederate Foot Artillery sword from the Civil War. It has an overall length of 24", with a blade length of 18 1/2". According to Albaugh's book, "Confederate Edged Weapons", on page 140 he states that the makers of these swords are unknown. The cast brass hilt has all the rough casting traits of a Confederate piece. The letters CS are poorly cast in the guard on the obverse and reverse sides. The five point star cast into each side of the pommel are also crudely cast. The brass does have a nice medium mustard patina to it. The double edged blade has an "out of the attic" black patina to it. Both edges of the blade have a couple of nicks. The unstopped fuller in the center of the blade measures 12 1/4" in length. This Confederate short sword still has the wooden scabbard with it. The scabbards are probably harder to come by than the sword itself. It is a simple, black painted wooden scabbard with tin mounts that have also been painted black. The scabbard is in very strong condition, with the top mount and drag being securely attached. While these short swords were issue to offer the foot artillerymen a means of defending themselves, it seems they were most often used to clear brush when placing the guns in position. These Confederate short swords don't come along very often with the scabbard, and this one will compliment any Confederate blade collection.
