This is an identified US Navy Sailor's grouping from World War I. The grouping consists of the sailor's Navy blue jumper, bell bottom trousers, black silk neckerchief, flat hat and sea bag. These items belonged to O.B. Pitts, a WWI sailor aboard the USS George Washington. The George Washington was an ocean liner built in 1908 for the North German Lloyd company based out of Bremen, Germany. The United States interned the ship at the outbreak of WWI, and when we entered the war in 1917 converted the ship into a troop transport manned by the US Navy. The USS George Washington transported 48,000 soldiers to France, and returned 34,000 of them to the states after the Armistice was signed. President Woodrow Wilson sailed on the ship twice to attend the Paris Peace Conference. It was during this time period between September 1917 and November 1918 that Pitts served aboard the ship as a Machinist's Mate Second Class. The uniform is in very good condition, having just a couple of small moth holes in the jumper. The bottom of the left leg just above the hem of the cuff has a period repair of a tear in the material. All buttons are present on the pants, as well as the draw string in the back. The Machinist's Mate Second Class Insignia has been hand sewn onto the left sleeve of the jumper. The white piping on the sleeve cuffs, flap and the stars on the flap still have a bright appearance. The black silk neckerchief is still with the uniform, and really helps with the display power of the piece. The "flat hat" is in good condition, and has the gold lettering of USS GEORGE WASHINGTON around the band. There is some separation of the material where the lettering is stamped on the band. Pitts' sea bag is soiled and stained, but is in solid condition with no holes or tears. The tie cord is still with it. For a uniform that's a little over 100 years old, this one makes a pretty strong display.
