This is a Model 1917 trench knife designed by Henry Disston & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The trench warfare of WWI necessitated a new design of weapon, as the rifle and bayonet were often restricted by the space of the trenches. The Model 1917 was designed strictly as a stabbing weapon. The knife has a triangular blade measuring 9" that tapers to a point and an overall length of 13 1/2". This design of blade was chosen because it was found to easily penetrate clothing and leather. The hilt is made of a single piece wooden grip within a knuckle bow and guard. The knuckle bow was stamped from sheet iron with pyramidal shaped knobs down the center of the bow so that a blow delivered with the fist would be devastating. The blade was blued, along with the knuckle bow, guard and all metal parts of the scabbard. This Model 1917 trench knife is in fantastic, untouched condition. The quillon is stamped U.S./ L.F.&C/1917, representing the manufacturers of Landers, Frary and Clark. The first four inches of the bluing have worn off the blade, due to the tight fit of the sheath. The sheath in very good condition. The metal throat and tip of the scabbard retain almost all the bluing. The green leather scabbard is still very pliable, the stitching is strong and unbroken. The letters MS are stamped into the throat, the maker most likely. The brass Model 1910 hook to attach the sheath to a belt is still reporting for duty. This is a piece of American WWI fighting gear that survived the last 103 years in amazing condition.
