This is a non dug Atlanta Arsenal CSA rectangle buckle produced during the American Civil War. This sand cast brass plate has all the casting flaws and file marks that every collector wants to see. It measures 48x69 and is very similar to plate 071 listed in Steve Mullinax's Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates book. This style of Atlanta Arsenal plates have been attributed to Longstreet's Corps when they were detached from the Army of Northern Virginia and campaigned around Knoxville. This one walked into the shop from Rogersville, Tennessee, site of a smaller battle fought on 6 November, 1863. It is also along the main route between Knoxville and eastern Tennessee. The buckle has tremendous eye appeal, the recessed areas of the buckle have a medium chocolate patina, while the raised border and those magical letters C.S.A. have a muted golden patina. All three hooks are still intact, and the buckle shows some definite body curve to it. No doubt this was worn by one of Longstreet's men during the 1st Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia's campaigns in East Tennessee. It will certainly fit into any Confederate collection, and could be the center piece to many collections!
