This is a US Army Model 1937 wool shirt used during World War II. These are the standard shirts worn by all Army and Army Air Corps personnel during the war. It is made of "mustard" colored wool flannel material. The quartermaster tag is still legible and reads "S. Liebovitz & Sons, Inc." This contract is dated 16 May, 1942 and is from the Philadelphia Quarter Master Depot. The shirt is in very good condition, having all it's buttons and no rips, tears or holes. It does have one small stain on the right breast pocket. It is a smaller size, being a 15 x 32. Sewn on each sleeve are the chevrons of a Master Sergeant. On the left sleeve above the rank is a 5th Air Force patch. Above the cuff on the left sleeve are six overseas stripes, indicating three years of combat service. There is the shadow of an Honorable Service patch, commonly referred to as the "Ruptured Duck", where it was sewn above the right pocket. The 5th Air Force fought in the South West Pacific Theater and was based in Australia after the Battle of the Philippines in 1941-1942. As the war in the Pacific moved towards Japan, the 5th Air Force moved with it, establishing bases across the Pacific. The 5th Air Force was comprised of three fighter groups and five bomber groups. When the war ended the 5th Air Force had an unmatched record of 3445 aerial victories, led by the nations top two aces, Major's Richard Bong and Thomas McGuire. They were two of the 5th's 10 Medal of Honor recipients. This Master Sergeant's shirt would look great on a mannequin and compliment any WWII Army Air Corps collection.
