Illustration from Harpers Weekly The Stone Bridge Over Antietam Creek
Item #: WR313
This is an illustrated page from the article printed by Harper's Weekly covering the fighting at Antietam Creek on 17 September, 1862. This battle was the costliest one day fight of the entire Civil War. At the end of the day there was a combine total of 22,717 dead, wounded or missing soldiers. This stone bridge, later called Burnside's Bridge, played a crucial part in the battle. MG Ambrose Burnside's Corps captured the bridge and was advancing on the Confederate right flank, threatening to turn it. At the last minute MG A.P. Hill's Division arrived from Harper's Ferry and attacked Burnside, driving him off the field and across the stone bridge, effectively ending the days fighting. The illustration measures 8 3/4" wide and 9 1/2" tall. The one page section of the article is mounted on a piece of cardboard and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed 157 years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. If you collect Civil War documents this piece will fit right in!
