This is a riker case with four Civil War bullets, two buttons, an image of general Robert E. Lee, an image of General Ambrose Burnside, and a depiction of artillery in action at Fredericksburg, Virginia. The four bullets and two buttons were recovered in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia", along with the identification of each bullet and button and the dates of the battle. The Battle of Fredericksburg took place between 11 and 15 December, 1862. 122,000 Union soldiers under the command of Major General Ambrose Burnside, attacked 78,513 Confederate soldiers in and around Fredericksburg. During the battle the Union casualties were 1284 killed, 9600 wounded and 1769 captured or missing. The Confederate losses were 608 killed, 4116 wounded and 653 captured or missing. During an inspection of the defenses General Longstreet was heard to question his Chief of Artillery, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander, if he had enough guns to cover the front of his position. Alexander was heard to say, "General, we cover that ground now so well that we will comb it as with a fine tooth comb. A chicken could not live on that field when we open up on it." Alexander proved to be very correct, as Union casualties were twice that of the Confederates. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
