This is an illustrated page from the article printed by Harper's Weekly covering Major General George G. Meade. Meade was a career US Army officer and civil engineer. He is best know for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg. He fought with distinction in the Second Seminole War and during the Mexican American War. During the American Civil War he served as a Brigade commander and rose to the position of Commander of the Army of the Potomac. The illustration measures 9" wide and 11 1/4" tall. The one page section of the article is mounted on a piece of cardboard and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed 156 years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. The black and white illustration shows Meade in his Major General's uniform, with his hands behind his back. If you collect Civil War documents this piece will fit right in!
