This is a US Model 1904 McClellan saddle used by US Army during the World War I. This saddle is in original condition and shows no repairs at all. The open seat saddle tree is in excellent condition, having no damage at all. The russet leather covering the seat is in very good condition. There are no tears, holes or rips in the leather. Both trees are covered in the same russet leather, and while they do show some wear from use, they have no damage. All the stitching is tight, strong and unfrayed. The three brass escutcheon plates on the cantle and one on the pommel are securely attached to the mortises. The saddle shield is also securely attached to the pommel, and reads "12 INCH SEAT". The pommel and cantle quarter straps on the left side of the saddle are securely attached, the right side straps are missing. They show some light crazing on the high points of the straps. Heavy, russet harness leather straps with large brass roller buckles attach a bent oak wooden stirrup to each side of the saddle. The stirrups, one having a 4" tread, the other a 3 1/4" tread, show heavy use and wear and tear is obvious. The larger stirrup is broken on the right side, but still has the heavy russet leather foul weather guard. The smaller stirrup is intact, but the foul weather guard is missing. All of the correct hardware, pommel and cantle rings, staples and saddle bag hook are present and secure. In addition to the usual hardware, this saddle has an additional tow ring at the front of the pommel and one behind the saddle bag lug. This is a characteristic of an artillery saddle. By 1916 the US Army had 15 Cavalry Regiments. In May of 1917, a month after the US entered WWI, an additional 28 more regiments were created. Twenty of these new regiments would go on to be reorganized into artillery and trench mortar units. The horse was found to be more useful pulling artillery pieces, supply wagons and ambulances. Only the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the US Army would see actual combat as a Cavalry unit. This saddle is typical of what these WWI artillery soldiers would have used.
