This is an illustrated page from the article printed by Harper's Weekly covering Admiral David D. Porter. Porter was a career US Naval officer, being the second in Naval history to gain the rank of Admiral. He began his naval service as a midshipmen under his father, Commodore David Porter, at the age of 10. Porter served in the Mexican War, taking part in the attack of the fort at Vera Cruz. During the Civil War he commanded an independent flotilla of mortar boats at the Siege of New Orleans. As an acting Rear Admiral, Porter worked in concert with Major General Ulysses Grant during the siege and capture of Vicksburg. The illustration measures 8 3/4" wide and 12" tall. The one page section of the article is mounted on a piece of cardboard and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. The black and white illustration shows a bust of Porter facing to the right in his Admiral's uniform. If you collect Civil War documents this piece will fit right in!
