This is an illustrated page from the article printed by Harper's Weekly covering Brigadier General Judson C. Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick was a US Army officer during the Civil War. He graduated from West Point in 1861, just after the start of the Civil War. His military career was short, the duration of the war, but it was quite colorful. Three days after receiving his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant he was promoted to Captain in the 5th New York Infantry Regiment. Kilpatrick was the first Union Army officer to be wounded, being struck by canister fire at the Battle of Big Bethel on 10 June, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in September of of 1861 and commanded the 2nd New York Cavalry Regiment. The Cavalry was where Kilpatrick gained notoriety, being disliked by his men and southerners alike for his careless tactics and wantoned destruction of civilian property. He was referred to by both sides as "Kill Cavalry" due to the reckless and often foolish charges he ordered carried out by his Cavalry units. Eventually Judson Kilpatrick would rise to the rank of Brevet Major General. When the Civil War ended he left the Army to pursue a life in politics. The illustration measures 9" wide and 8 1/2" tall. The one page section of the article is mounted on a piece of cardboard and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. The black and white illustration shows a bust of Kilpatrick facing forward in his Brigadier General's uniform. If you collect Civil War documents this piece will fit right in!
